This week at Jocks N' Hops, I thought it would be special to hand out a special award, The Shut the Hell Up award. An award that goes to a deserving individual who just doesn't know when to shut the hell up. That person is nobody other than Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling. If you don't follow sports or just don't pay attention, Donald Sterling was recently banned from life by the NBA after recorded conversations leaked to the public containing racist comments from him. While it can be argued that it wasn't fair for his private life to be made public, it doesn't change who he is or the fact that he's shown racist tendencies for many years (just google his history of lawsuits). However, I decided that Sterling earned this award last week during an interview with Anderson Cooper. In the interview, he goes on to say he isn't racist and he was baited into saying racist things by his "side chick" V. Stiviano (of course he was baited...). After saying that, he then goes on to claim he's spoken with Magic Johnson, but then says that Magic Johnson has done nothing for minorities and is a bad example to minorities because he walks around with "The AIDS". Obviously, Magic Johnson has since responded in a professional manner and I think we all know that despite whatever illness he may have, he is still a person to look up to not only in the black community, but a person to look up to in America in general. I wish that this issue would go away soon, but expect it to be in the news for the following months now that Sterling is suing the NBA. To read/see more on Sterling's interview: watch here. So Donald Sterling, Jocks N' Hops would like for you to SHUT THE HELL UP!!
This week for the Beer of the Week, I have decided to highlight the newest brewery in Charlottesville, C'Ville-ian Brewing Company. C'Ville-ian just opened on 4/26 and is owned by military vet Stephen Gibbs. Stephen is just your average guy who loves craft beer and decided to turn that love into a business. Right now they are still finding their comfort zone and have 5 beers on tap. The two beers that will be making changes immediately will be his IPA and Stout. For first time tastings, the IPA and Stout didn't have the taste of your traditional IPA and stouts. However, you can expect new, stronger batches of those beers to come soon which I am sure will be crowd pleasers. After my visit to the brewery, I see nothing but good things for Stephen. The location is a real nice atmosphere that can hold many events and and he is already building relationships with other Charlottesville breweries to help get a better grasp on the business and market. If you are in the Charlottesville area this summer, make sure that you add C'Ville-ian Brewing to your list of breweries. To Mr Gibbs, congratulations on your new adventure in craft beer and thank you for defending and representing America.
Tune in next week, where I'll report what I can remember from the Annual Beerfest in Norfolk. Until then, Drink Responsibly and Enjoy your Beer.
