Ah! March Madness is here. The time of year that every team in the country has the chance to earn their "One Shining Moment". Well, almost every team. I don't know about everyone else, but I believe this next month of college hoops starts off a series of sporting events that are among the most popular in the country. The great thing about the conference/national tournaments is that it gives us all the chance to relate with our favorite schools/teams on a bigger level. Whether you cheer for traditional powers like Indiana & UCLA or the "mid-majors" like Wichita State or St. Louis, you are ensured to be tuned in until the very end. For those that know me, I've cheered for UNC since I was a little kid, but my fondest tourney memories are the ones provided by my alma mater, ODU. From Alex Loughton lighting up Michigan State in defeat in 2005, to the Monarchs beating the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame in 2010, or even the Monarchs falling on a cheap last second put-back to the tourney runner-up Butler in 2011, those moments will be with me forever. Like many, even though I was not on the team, I felt I was at those games and cheered like crazy. For the small schools, the tournament is a lot of times their one moment to show everyone that they may be able to stand up to the big kids on the block. As for the traditional powers, this is what they are judged on the minute their name shows up in the preseason polls. Oh yea, this also a time of year that us bracket geniuses get the chance to win some cash-money in the company/community/fraternity pools. Nobody ever gets them all right, but I can still wish it'll happen for me one day.
Now for the Beer of the Week. This week's beer selection is "Chin Music" by Center of the Universe Brewery in Ashland, VA. This beer is an amber lager that was created by the brewery in honor of the Richmond Flying Squirrels baseball team. For those of you who don't try many different beers, this lager is similar to Yuengling. There isn't a particular taste that stands out with this beer, but it easy to drink and definitely serves its purpose as a beer to drink during the summer while watching the ball game or grilling out. This beer has made it way to some bars in the Central VA area, but keep posted to trinkin.com to see where it will hit stores. On a scale of 1 to 5 kegs, I give "Chin Music" 3 1/2 kegs. For more info on what COTU has to offer, you can visit their website www.cotubrewing.com
Until next time, drink responsibly and enjoy your beer.
