Happy NCAA Tourney time to all you sports nuts out there! The tournament has been going on for only hours and I know that people already have damaged brackets (Thanks Buckeyes). With the big dance taking place, this is a great lead into what my sports thought of the week entails. The good ole "One & Done Rule" when it pertains to today's college basketball players. For those who do not keep up with this issue, the NBA in 2005 upped the minimum age limit for players to join the league from 18 to 19. This basically made it a requirement for all players to spend 1 year in college before declaring for the NBA Draft in the summer. As a result, you have seen what I feel is a drop in overall quality of play in college and the NBA. Even though you have seen players like Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and Derrick Rose (before the injuries) shine with 1 year of college, you have also seen many players come to the NBA and have no real impact. This has led to NBA fans having to see products such as the Philadelphia 76ers and the Milwuakee Bucks. College has also been effected by the rule because with players leaving early, you rarely see continuity, consistency, and growth. Teams rarely stick together for multiple years and you end up seeing games with scores like 48-45. I think the best thing basketball can do is adopt baseball's method of drafting, which is you can either enter the draft at 18, or you stay in college for 3 years. By doing this, you'll see more development among the players in college and this will give the NBA the opportunity to better utilize their Developmental League. I know these players want to get paid right away, but remember, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar all spent multiple years in college and they all had some pretty good NBA Careers.
And now for the Beer of the Week. The beer I have decided to study in honor of it being St. Patty's Day and Pikes Patty's Day (shout out to Pi-K-A) is Dry Irish Stout by The Brooklyn Brewery. This is a seasonal beer that is dark in color that has an English brown and malty taste. Most stouts have more of a coffee taste, but this is stout doesn't have that taste and is a pretty smooth drink. This is something that you can have more than one of and enjoy. On a scale of 1 to 5 kegs, I give this week's pick 4 kegs. If you would like to learn more about Brooklyn Brewery, you can visit BrooklynBrewery.com.
That is all until next time. So as always, Drink Responsibly and Enjoy the Beer!
